What types of senior care are licensed in Utah?

Utah's DLBC licenses assisted living (Type I and Type II, with secure memory care units in Type II), nursing care facilities, home health agencies, hospices, personal care agencies for non-medical home care, and adult day care.

Each care type below explains what the license allows, what it costs in Utah and where providers are in Salt Lake and Tooele counties.

How do I choose the right type of care?

Match the help needed to the license: personal care agencies for set hours at home, Type I assisted living for people who can get out of a building alone, Type II for people who need one person's help, a secure unit for dementia with wandering, and a nursing care facility for 24-hour skilled nursing.

Our comparison guides go deeper on each choice, and the facility directory shows every licensed provider in Salt Lake and Tooele counties.

What is not a licensed care type in Utah?

Independent living apartments that do not provide personal care, senior centers, and private caregivers a family hires directly are not licensed as care settings by DLBC, which means no state inspection record exists for them.

That does not make them bad choices, but it changes what you can check, because no state inspector has visited. For a private caregiver, run your own background check and references; for independent living, ask which licensed agency provides any care in the building.
