Does Utah Medicaid pay for assisted living?

Utah Medicaid does not pay assisted living rent, but the New Choices Waiver can pay for care services in a licensed assisted living facility for eligible people, while their own income covers room and board.

Eligibility paths include a 90-day Medicaid nursing facility stay or 365 days living in a licensed assisted living facility, plus nursing facility level of care and Medicaid financial eligibility.

What is the cheapest way to get help for a parent at home in Salt Lake County?

Start with free and low-cost county services such as Meals on Wheels and caregiver support through Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services (385-468-3200), then add paid help for specific hours.

Adult day care often costs less per hour than in-home care. For people who qualify for Medicaid and need nursing-home-level care, the Aging Waiver can pay for in-home services after a waiting period.

Will Medicare pay for a nursing home after a fall?

Medicare pays for a limited skilled nursing facility stay only after an inpatient hospital stay of at least three days and only while daily skilled care is needed, up to 100 days per benefit period with coinsurance after day 20.

If a parent was kept under observation rather than admitted, the stay may not qualify. Ask the hospital about status before discharge.

Does long-term care insurance cover Utah assisted living?

Most long-term care policies cover licensed assisted living and licensed home care once the policyholder meets the benefit trigger, usually needing help with two or more daily activities or having a cognitive impairment.

Read the policy's definition of a qualifying facility or agency; in Utah that means a DLBC license. Call the insurer before move-in to start the elimination period.

What do I need to apply for VA Aid and Attendance?

You will need discharge papers, proof of income and assets, evidence of care costs, and a physician's statement about the need for help with daily activities; for a surviving spouse, marriage and death certificates.

Accredited Veterans Service Officers help for free. The 2026 maximum for a single veteran with Aid and Attendance is $29,093 a year, before countable income.

Are assisted living costs tax deductible?

Part or all of assisted living costs can be deductible as medical expenses when a resident is chronically ill and the care follows a plan prescribed by a licensed health care practitioner, but the rules are detailed.

Ask a tax professional before filing, and ask the facility for an itemized statement separating care from room and board.
